L'association culturelle A, comme Arts, vous propose ce dimanche 19 juin sur la place Achille-Laugé, son deuxième marché des arts. Vous y rencontrerez des peintres, sculpteurs, écrivains et musiciens, tels que Barbara et Russi Dordi, Mireille Fourmont, Mana-Paz-Graino, Lynne Mitchell, Chat Robinson, Geneviève Gourvil, Marie Guillerm… l'écrivain Paule-Elisabeth Oddero (qui n'est autre que le maire de Brugairolles) et beaucoup d'autres artistes, débutants et confirmés.

Bien sûr, s'il fait beau, tout cela se déroulera à l'extérieur, et en cas de mauvais temps à l'intérieur du foyer.

Un couple uni par leurs passions artistiques

Barbara écrit, Russi peint, dessine et illustre

Lors du premier marché de l'Art, qui s'est déroulé dans le village, nous avions rencontré Barbara et Russi Dordi, époux dans la vie, ayant des points communs dans la poésie, la peinture… Elle, est née dans le nord de l'Angleterre, a enseigné la littérature anglaise et entrepris des études de théâtre dans les écoles et universités du Kent avant de prendre sa retraite et se consacrer à sa propre écriture.

En 1995, avec son époux, Russi, ils se promènent sur le Saxon Shoreway et pendant 6 mois, ils organisent des expositions aux galeries de la bibliothèque du Kent pour lancer « Saxons in the Garden », un livre de poésies de Barbara, illustré par Russi. Depuis 1999, elle a édité Equinox, magazine de poésies et depuis, encore, cinq livres tous illustrés par son mari. Elle a obtenu des récompenses pour ses œuvres qui ont été imprimées dans plusieurs journaux et magazines. Elle fait des sculptures en céramique. En 2001, ils ont acheté une maison en France qu'ils ont restaurée. Ils ont vécu à Alaigne et sont maintenant à Cailhau.

Lui, Russi vient de Bombay, Inde, et a émigré en 1955 en Angleterre. Il a enseigné l'art et la poterie dans les écoles et établissements pour adultes. Depuis sa retraite, il peint à plein temps de l'art abstrait, dessine des paysages et/ou formes humaines dues à son inspiration. Ses œuvres destinées à des collections privées, ont été exposées dans le monde entier. Actuellement, elles sont dans la Galery Castle Arts de Canterbury, mais aussi à Whistable et Londres. Il est membre de la Société des Arts du Kent et de la Société. Nationale. Tous deux font des expositions pour lancer « Saxon in the Garden ». En 1999, ils ont gagné des prix adultes peintures et poésies combinées. Le mot de la fin : « Nous créons ensemble de nouvelles œuvres inspirées par notre amour de la France. Nous avons exposé à Mirepoix, Belvèze, Amaign, Peyrefitte… et maintenant à Cailhau.» Un autre point commun : le chant puisqu'ils font partie de la chorale d'Alaigne.

LE PREMIER MARCHE DES ARTS
CAILHAU

Sur le canton d'Alaigne, on la connaît d'abord comme maire de la commune mais moins comme écrivain-poète. La première édition du Marché des arts à Cailhau qui s'est déroulé ce dimanche 3 avril a permis à notre reporter, qui est aussi son amie, de la rencontre parmi les artistes présents. En effet, Paule-Élisabeth Oddero présentait sur son stand, sous un Arthur Rimbaud parti, hélas, pour d'autres ceux, quelques-unes de ses productions : « Fracture », écrit en collaboration avec le peintre Maurice Cousigné, « Maladie de l'ébène » avec le graveur Michel Roncerel, « Foudre » avec Raphaël Kleweta éditeur, graveur sis à Belvèze.

C'est toujours accompagnée de plasticiens, peintres, graveurs, dessinateurs que notre écrivain continue son chemin. « Je travaille actuellement sur les lucioles, la disparition des lucioles dont parlait Pier Paolo Pasolini… Dans les feux médiatiques où l'on se perd, dans les tragédies du monde, il y a des petites lumières qui clignotent dans la nuit, elles appellent à la résistance et à la beauté », déclare l'écrivain. C'est en cela que la poésie et l'art sont indispensables à tout un chacun. Et ce dimanche dans la salle d'art à Cailhau, ils étaient tous bien présents.

'This collection comprises 60 poems from authors ranging in age from 12 to 89 and located in the West Indies, UK, Ireland and Europe. Some contributors are seasoned - even famous - poets; some beginners; the only brief we gave folk was to send us a poem for Haiti. Some have responded directly, or elliptically, to the traumatic events on and after the earthquake of January 2010; others have sent a selection from their recent work as gifts to the people of Haiti. All of them have given their work for free, the aim being to swell the fund for the reconstructive work on the island - and of course to provide a good stimulating read.'

DES TRESORS DE CAILHAU OCTOBRE 2010

As secretary of the Club du Clocher Vert, I was given the task or organising an exhibition for artist residing in Cailhau - professionals and amateurs alike. After much persuading - some people being excessively modest - we finally had enough work to fill the village hall. The exhibition which took place on the 23rd and 24th October, proved to be a great success - we had watercolours, oils, acrylics, novels, upholstery, painted furniture, flower arrangements and poetry. The mayor Monsieur Afflatet was amazed to discover just how much talent there is in his tiny hilltop village of just 240 inhabitants. We had many visitors from surrounding villages who were also pleasantly surprised to find such diverse talent in our little village.

These are a couple of photographs of my books and Russi's paintings. Russi's tryptich with 5 hanging vignettes caused quite a stir! I sold more poetry books during this weekend than I have ever sold at an exhibition in France. I think my English Conversation group were out to impress by buying my English poetry as well as my French translations.

Russi and I were invited to exhibit our work at the 5th edition of the MJC (Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture du Razès)which aims to bring Art to the small villages of the Razès - an area of the Aude close to where we live in SW France.

Eleven artists exhibited - 86 works were on display.

Christine Giro, organiser of the MJC du Razès invites the Mayor of the village to comment on the exhibition.

Apple and Eve was launched at the Gibbs Gallery, Canterbury in 1999. As well as copies of the book, the original illustrations: 9 watercolours and 1 oil painting were on display. The exhibition lasted for three weeks.

Apple and Eve takes a wry look inside the Garden of Eden. The poem explores Eve's temptation through a dialogue between Eve and the Serpent.

'I wonder about evil too.
Is it sturdy and gnarled like this tree?
Does it have four heads like the river out of Eden? Is it invisible, like wind? Did God give it perfume like the ripe fruit above me, fat with his secret? Is it soft and warm like flesh, all shades of blue like sky on river; does it flash red and gold in the green like the hummingbird?
Does evil have a voice? Does it coo, babble, moan, shriek? Does it sing - low, high? Does it scream?'

Following the launch, the exhibition was shown at selected libraries throughout Kent.

When our French friends saw Apple and Eve, they loved the illustrations but couldn't understand the text and so asked for a translation - hence Eve et la Pomme - the French version, was born.

This book is a record in poems and pictures of our first few years in the small village of Alaigne in the South of France, 30 km from Carcassonne.

Entre-Deux contains over 32 colour illustrations of poems written in English. When the book is turned upside down and back to front, the French translations can be read.

For the last 9 years my husband and I have divided our time between Kent and the south of France where we have renovated an old agricultural building and created a Mediterranean garden. Poems and paintings which emanated from this project have found expression in Entre-Deux – Two Francophiles in Alaigne, written in English and translated into French. The vine-clad hills; conversing with villagers; singing in the local choir; reading and writing poetry in French; country life in the Midi is extremely seductive.

Autumn in Alaigne

Changes seep inside you, breaking surface
now and then: greens fading to gold, fading
to copper, fading to rust; vine leaves
are having their tips hennaed. Only when you climb
the hills, the great tablecloth of the Aude
spread before you, are your eyes fully opened:
as if overnight, the alchemist
has emptied his crucible on the landscape,

the magnesium glow of vineyards
his most precious transmutation.
Sunflower land is now neatly combed, her tanned
scalp flecked with flint-sharp bones. Giraffe plane trees
stride the road to the village, roofs and church spire
fast turning rose. And the black silhouettes
of cypresses? Cathar warriors
guarding the peace in the place of the dead.

You want to embrace it, make it a part
of you, this fleeting slot between extremes
that greedily swallows summer warmth,
gulping down whole chunks of daylight
to regurgitate amazing vibrancies.
Under a fading Languedoc sky
you try to capture it on film, on paper,
but the result is always a lie.

"When Barbara and Russi Dordi bought a house in France, their neighbours in the unspoiled village of Alaigne in the Midi were very welcoming. On discovering that the couple were artists, they insisted that they exhibit at the Fête de la Fleur the following May. Barbara was so enamoured by the landscape and people that she had already written a few poems recording her feelings, so since nobody in the village spoke English, she translated the work ready for the exhibition. When Russi had illustrated her poems, the couple made a pamphlet as a convenient way of recording their first year in Alaigne, as well as showing their neighbours exactly how they felt about living in France. The exhibition was a great success, largely due to the portrait of Albert, their immediate neighbour, which is very true-to-life, and of which he is enormously proud, so much so that he invited his relatives from neighbouring villages to view it!. The pamphlet is now a book since it has been updated to include more recent work from both artists. There are now over 20 colour illustrations and further poems about the Languedoc and its people, in both English and French."

Blurred behind windows
condensation beaded,
tree light wink the promise
of a clear road to Canterbury.

Through lofty stone arches
- no fee to pay today-
red-cheeked clerics mouth
the first seasonal greeting.

Banks of candles flanking the altar
flicker as white frilled choirs file in;
latecomers led in discretely,
the organ rumbling thunder.

At the great west door, a rush of air;

A loose translation of Apple and Eve, Ève et la Pomme is a French version of the English original. The 'events' in this French version are somewhat re-arranged to suit the French language and culture. Translating was an interesting exercise which prompted me to revise the English version.

This, my first chapbook came into being as a result of walking 140 miles of the Kent coastline from Gravesend to Rye as it allegedly was in Saxon times. I am very grateful to Alison Wainwright of Sawd Books for having the courage to take on this then, unknown writer.

During the 18 months we took to walk the Shore Way, we travelled over 1000 miles by car to and from the start of each section of the walk - there being 10 sections in all (according to the Saxon Shore Way guides produced by the Kent area of the Ramblers Association in co-operation with the Footpaths Section of Kent County Council.) We rarely did circular walks, always opting to get back by bus, train or car (if we were fortunate enough to have friends with us).

It was a fascinating project - showing us parts of the county we would never otherwise have visited, and making us see the Kent we knew in a very different light. We marvelled at the beauty and richness of the country's flora and fauna, and were inspired to delve into Kent's extraordinary history.

We met interesting people from all walks of life who were generous with anecdotes and memories of their unique experience of living and working here.

We enjoyed walking and working together: each privetly being moved by the same experience in different ways, painting sparking off poetry and vice versa, or both going in completely independent directions.

Walking the Saxon Shore way gave us a curious sense of identity with the path as well as a particular familiarity with, and affection for, Kent, our adopted county. I can thoroughly recommend getting out there and experiencing it for yourselves.

KHARTOUM TIME

Under polystyrene,

Shornmead, demolished

until we think of Khartoum.

In gun emplacements

with misty river views we rest,

in a time warp we take shelter:

soldiers, scarlet-clad,

A twice-yearly (April & October) international literary magazine of poetry and prose, The French Literary Review aims to bring together writers not only from France but also to welcome anyone in the world who has a French connection in their writing.

The magazine is in A5 format and is stapled. We publish in black and white with a cream cover, in the tradition of French academic publications. In every issue, two or three pieces of writing are selected for illustration. There is also a reviews section.

SUBMISSIONS

We are looking for lively, contemporary poems; short stories; extracts from novels which stand on their own; black and white paintings/drawings, all of which should have a French connection.· Stories (maximum 2) should be between 1000-3000 words.· Poems (up to 3) of less than 40 lines each. (In English or French)· Original black and white paintings or drawings ( A4 size maximum) which either illustrate a poem / story submitted, or are related to France in some way. No photographs please.· Submissions must be typewritten on one side of the paper. Stories should be double spaced and have good margins. Hand-written entries cannot be accepted.· Please ensure your name, address, telephone number and email address appear on your MSS.· Please provide an SAE if you would like your MS returned. Copyright remains with contributors.

EQUINOX - A POETRY JOURNAL

An A5 poetry journal illustrated in colour, Equinox publishes original poems — especially contemporary voices — on any subject and in any style. I am looking for technically accomplished poems which employ striking imagery to convey a truth about life in an unusual/unexpected way. There has to be something about a poem which stays with me after the initial reading.

In each issue Russi Dordi chooses two or three contributors' poems to illustrate in colour. As well as being published in the magazine, illustrations are also reproduced as prints and cards.

There is the challenge of responding to a famous/not so famouspoem or an original painting, and there is also a Reviews section. The most recent addition is the Featured Poet section.

Contributors have included Gillian Allnutt, U.A. Fanthorpe, W.N. Herbert, Ann Drysdale, John Whitworth, William Oxley, Myra Schneider, Mario Petrucci, Peter Sirr, Tony Curtis, Katherine Gallagher and others.

Since this is a non-profit journal which relies solely on subscriptions, fees cannot be paid to contributors.

SUBMISSIONS of up to four previously unpublished poems at a time are welcome. Each poem (maximum 40 lines) must include the poet's name, address and email address. We cannot respond to UK submissions which do not include an SAE (using British postage stamps). European contributors - euro stamps please. Overseas, please include IRCs to the value of £1.20 sterling. Copy deadline: 30th November and 30th June.

AT LAST!

In response to the many requests I have had for a website address - here is my attempt to create not a website, but a blog, so that writers interested in the work I do as editor and writer, will be able to keep up to date with my work.

Equinox - A Poetry Journal and The French Literary Review are the two magazines I edit.

I founded Equinox in1999 and I took over The French Literary Review as editor with issue 8 in 2007. Copies of four editions of Equinox and three editions of The French Literary Review have been digitised by The Poetry Library, Royal Festival Hall, London and can be viewed on: http://www.poetrymagazines.org.uk/
